When contacted by a bill collector or debt collector, you have the right to dispute the bill or debt either verbally or in writing within thirty (30) days of the receipt of the first notice from the bill collector or debt collector. You must do that to preserve the rights granted to you through the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). FDCPA provides limited protection even to those who owe the bill or debt and cannot pay it, because of their financial situation or some other reason. To preserve your rights under FDCPA, it is crucial to keep good records of all of the contacts or attempted contacts (written and oral, via phone, voice mail, letter, etc).

1. Keep copies of all letters and notices sent to you from bill collectors or debt collectors.

4. Please note that in Florida and other states you have to get agreement from the bill collector or debt collector that you are recording the conversation and have the bill collector's or debt collector's permission to record it.
